How Churches Can Use Video to Enhance Their Message

For many churches, the idea of using video can feel overwhelming or out of reach, especially in a world where everything is so polished and well produced. But video doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to be effective. With a little creativity and the right mindset, even the simplest videos can make a big impact—and help your church connect with people in powerful ways.
We recently sat down with Corbin Veltum, founder of Veltum Productions, to talk about the power of video in ministry and how churches can get started with what they have. Corbin's passion for filmmaking, combined with his heart for the Church, makes him a valuable voice for churches seeking to communicate more effectively in today’s visual culture. Here's what he had to say:

How did you get started doing video?
"My journey started when I was a kid. I grew up loving movies and that love became a passion. I fell in love with every aspect of film. Everything from the filmmaking, acting, sound, and cinematography, I couldn’t get enough of it.
That same passion led me to Full Sail University in 2019. There I learned how to shoot, edit, direct, stage, and produce various film projects. I originally intended to study film criticism, but it wasn’t until I began studying how to actually make movies that I realized I enjoyed that element a lot more. I graduated in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Digital Cinematography and since then I’ve been doing freelance video work with my own production company, Veltum Productions."
What kinds of videos make the biggest impact? and why do you think that is?
"Definitely testimonials. Testimonials are the easiest way to pull an audience in. Hearing someone's story of struggle, tragedy, or breakthrough is one of the most important and inspiring videos you can do for a church. It’s important to hear from our brothers and sisters in Christ on how they overcome obstacles. It gives people hope, increases faith, and ultimately gives the glory back to God."

Can you share any editing tips or tools that are budget-friendly but still get the job done?
"If you do choose to film on your phone, using iMovie is probably your best bet. It’s free and isn’t too difficult to learn. However, if you want a great editing software for your Mac or PC, DaVinci Resolve is a great program that is completely free as well."
What’s a common mistake you see churches make when it comes to video?
"The most common mistake I see is actually just the lack of video content in general. I’m sure some churches are concerned that they don’t have the right tools, but your overall goal should be to spread your message. It doesn’t matter how it’s put together; what matters is that you do it for the glory of the Lord."

How does working with a Marketing team help make video easier or more impactful?
"Having a team is always a good idea, especially if they are all in the same field. Anyone can fill in for anyone and it doesn’t have to come down to one person. Being able to brainstorm with other creative minds is never a bad thing. I think it’s easy for us to look at others in our field and compare ourselves, but I think we also need to be okay with learning from others with more experience. It’s important to remember that this field isn’t a competition, it’s a community and as soon as I learned that, it helped my mindset tremendously."
If a church can only afford a little outside help, what kind of video support makes the biggest difference?
"Reaching out to your church community and those in their communities can provide you with several options. There is a wide variety of individuals that are doing video now because it’s become a popular hobby over the last few years.
Also, reaching out to other churches and partnering with their video or communications team can not only improve your videos, but it can also get you connected in other ways with those churches. We as a church culture need to be okay with partnering with other churches in all forms of ministry. There’s no shame in it."

What would you say to a church that’s hesitant to start doing video at all?
"Start small. You don’t have to go big for your first video. Even if you want to start with social media reels and just see how your church responds to that. If you feel like there are more ways to capitalize on that, then experiment with video more. Get comfortable with what works for you first, then slowly build up your video platform."
Any final words of wisdom for the pastor trying to DIY their first CHurch video?
"Keep it short and sweet, it doesn’t have to be anything crazy. Just be open, be honest, be informative and always point the spotlight back to Jesus. Seek the Lord in all things that you do and give Him the glory in the end."
